“Submit to God, and you will have peace; then things will go well for you.” Job 22:21
I can become that which I wish to embrace.
Nerves. We’ve all got them and sometimes they come at the most inconvenient of times. If you’re “lucky,” that feeling in the pit of your stomach only comes up when there are true signs of danger or disturbance. But if you’re like me, that feeling surfaces whenever it wants and most of the time its unfounded. That’s right, I am fully aware that most of my nerves are set in unrealistic expectations and irrational fears… but that doesn’t make them go away. That doesn’t stop that horrid feeling in the pit of my stomach from trying to rise to my throat and make me want to climb back into bed to hide from them. The worst is knowing a panic or anxiety attack is looming and fighting the anticipation of it while pretending like everything is ok to get me through the day.
How can I live like that? It’s not easy. And I know it’s not easy for you either, my dear readers. When you have those moments where you get in your head and nothing feels right and you worry about what questions to ask or steps to take… not because you’re unable to deal with the reality, but because everything in you wants that reality to be untrue. So how do we deal? How do we keep Nervousness from taking over and stop irrational fears in their tracks? My favorite way, with affirmations. And I’m going to affirm you today not to be hindered but empowered to keep Nerves in their place. Let’s go!
Affirmation 1: Being anxious won’t break you. This is the first one I have to embrace, because when you’re always shaking sometimes it feels like you’ll shake loose. But human beings are complex creatures with complex emotions and very strong minds. Our bodies and minds are built to withstand many things, including feelings. You CAN survive it, and there are plenty of things to help with that. Affirmations, breathing techniques, therapy and even medication. Whatever healthy method works for you can and will if you let it.
Affirmation 2: Don’t feel, become. When combating anxiety, the feelings can be quite overwhelming as your body starts to have a physical response to an irrational thought. In those moments, you want to make the emotions you want to feel stronger than the tricks your mind is playing on you. So I recommend embodying the new feeling instead of just welcoming it into the space. Become strength. Become peace. Become joy. When you become something new, it empowers you to walk in that newness. So take the first step!
Affirmation 3: Submitting to a high power relinquishes my responsibility in the situation. I won’t speak for everyone but the thing that makes me most anxious is control. When I feel that I am losing control, I spiral, because it means I am powerless to stop what is coming. And I have to learn to be ok with that. The verse says “Submit to God, and you will have peace; then things will go well for you.” (Job 22:21) If I submit to God it means He is now responsible for the outcome, not me. And if I’m not responsible for how things turn out… what am I so nervous for? It is in that moment I can have peace, and become peace.
My friends, I pray peace over you, and the ability to embody and become peace so that Nerves don’t live there long. It is my hope that today you will find a peace that surpasses all understanding and gives your heartrate a rest. I believe in you. I love you, and I’m always rooting for you. Keep conquering daily!
